Employee Participation and Workplace Performance: an Examination of Universalistic, Contingency, and Configurational Perspectives

Based on data from 1,357 Canadian private sector workplaces, this study found no support for the argument that formal employee participation is a universal “best practice.” However, it found considerable support for the contingency and configurational perspectives, as there were significant interactions between employee participation and business strategy, and between employee participation and group financial participation.
